NOTES
During
the mid-80's, I worked for a small software company in Stockton,
Ca. that wanted to make a promotional video. We needed some
background music to go in the video, but we were worried about
finding some music that was actually good. You see, we had
recently tried running radio ads produced by a local agency, but
the advertising jingle they made for us turned out to be utterly
stupid. It was, without a doubt, the single most idiotic song
ever created.
Well, this was during the brief time I was a member of the
ill-fated band "Destination". The band had great
potential, but we lacked two important things: A) a drummer, and
B) doors of opportunity opened by God. At any rate, I told
everyone at work, "Never fear, me and
the band will make some background music for you!"
And they said, "Oh, great...",
rolled their eyes, and hoped we didn't make something even worse.
If our music stunk, how would they break the news to us?
So one night, while Ann was away at work, Tim and Ed came over. I
shared some concept ideas with them, Ed programmed some drum
rhythms, and away we went! We recorded both tunes directly onto
my 4-track reel-to-reel, and I later mixed them down using the
church soundboard. When everyone at work heard the results, they
were stunned. They marvelled and said, "Wow!
You made that!?" And, sure enough,
they used our tunes in the video. I guess we didn't stink after
all.
While I felt that my concepts for the tunes were pretty good, I
don't really think that was what made them shine. It was Tim's
delicious guitar solo's, performed entirely off-the-cuff and ad
lib! By the way, his distortion effects box had a dying battery,
and Tim insists that it contributed to the bright sizzly sound of
his guitar. He claims that he could never reproduce that hot
sound again!
